Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870)
This is a temporary 3 – 5 year Australian visa for parents/ legal parents/step-parents/parents in-law of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, to live in Australia.
Who is this Parent Visa suitable for?
This parent sponsored visa is suitable for the parents or legal guardians of Australian citizens/ permanent residents. This Australian visa for parents allows the holder to visit temporarily if they want to visit their children living in Australia. This temporary visa is designed for people that can financially support themselves during their visits, as work is not allowed.
What this Visa lets you do?

Temporarily live in Australia for 3-5 years.

Time in Australia can be extended for a maximum visit of 10 years, however, you must reapply for this visa.

Holders cannot work in Australia.

You can’t include family in this application.

You must have access to enough money to support yourself whilst living in Australia, due to the no work requirements for the visa.

Gather Documents

Get Sponsorship Approval
Must get sponsorship approval. The sponsorship approval will be provided in a Permission to Apply letter from the Department of Home Affairs. You must attach a copy of this letter to your visa application.
Prepare Documents
Translate all non-English documents translated into English. Scan or photograph all your documents (English and non-English) in colour.
Apply Online
Must apply online from outside Australia within 6 months of sponsorship approval.

This is required in all parents’ visas except the 870-parent visa. To pass this test you need to have at least half of you children living in Australia.
Contributory parent: faster processing, higher department fees.
Non-Contributory Parent: slower processing, lower department fees.
The sponsor will need to show they have a taxable income of at least $83,454.80.
